The Rocky Jr. Rebels capped off their season in thrilling fashion, claiming the B Division Championship with a 14–8 comeback victory over the Ponoka Broncs on Saturday Nov 1. It marked the Rebels’ first divisional title in several years, and they earned it through grit, discipline, and determination.
The championship game was a defensive battle from the outset, with both teams trading possessions through a scoreless first half. Ponoka struck first early in the third quarter, breaking through with a long run that set up a short touchdown rush. A successful two-point kick gave the Broncs an 8–0 lead.
The Rebels didn’t flinch. On the next Ponoka drive, Kyler Velichka got a hand on a Broncs’ pass, deflecting it into the arms of Charlie Molnar, who returned the interception deep into Broncs territory. Bentley Busby made the turnover count on the very next play, slicing through the defense for a 25-yard touchdown run. Molnar then added the two-point convert to tie the game 8–8 late in the third quarter.
The fourth quarter became a test of endurance and execution. Both teams battled for field position before the Rebels’ ground game began to wear down the Broncs defense. Behind the powerful running trio of Molnar, Busby, and Isaac Gorgichuk, Rocky marched the ball methodically downfield.
With the ball resting on the one-yard line and less than two minutes to play, quarterback Greyson Nichol called his own number, plunging into the end zone for his first rushing touchdown of the season. The Rebels took a 14–8 lead — one they would not relinquish.
The defense, which had been stout all afternoon, rose to the occasion once more. They forced a turnover on downs near midfield to seal the victory and the championship title.
Rocky’s success was built on complete team play. The Rebels finished the season without a single offensive turnover in their final games, while their defense forced three in the championship alone. Over their last three contests, the Rebels outscored opponents by a dominant 132–16 margin, a testament to their balanced attack and relentless defense.
As the team celebrates this memorable championship, the organization extends best wishes to the graduating bantam players moving on to high school football next season. The Rebels are also already looking ahead, hoping to build on this year’s success for another strong run next year.
