A group seeking around $250,000 in improvements to the Caroline School grounds is expressing optimism that the project will go ahead in the spring.
The entire project would see leveling of the football and soccer field, a walking track added, and wheelchair access from the parking lot.
Ultimately, the goal is to create a beautiful, accessible central space that people of all ages and abilities can enjoy for not only sports, but walking and socializing.
As it stands now, however, officials have said the “ground squirrel infested” field is in such poor condition that athletes are often bussed to Rocky Mountain House for track events and games.
Additionally, parts of the grounds are so uneven that mowing the grass has become difficult, and the hill from the parking lot is too steep for some residents to navigate.
Heather Nutting, chairman for the Caroline Enhancement committee speaks of the field’s poor condition
Fundraising has been going well, says Heather Nutting, chairman for the Caroline Enhancement Committee, as $160,000 has been raised — over 50 per cent of the overall goal.
“The community engagement has been incredible,” she says. “So many farmers, locals and business have helped us get to this point.”
Major donors include GTI and TC Energy, with Clearwater County contributing $75,000.

With the organization at the halfway point, it now becomes eligible to apply for the provincial Community Facility Enhancement Program (CFEP) grant.
While Nutting is optimistic the CFEP will come through, if it doesn’t, she says at least part of the project is still expected to go ahead, with the landscaping of the football field being the priority.
The organization expects to find out if their application is successful before spring.

In the meantime, the group is raffling off tickets to the Edmonton Oilers vs. Calgary Flames ‘Battle of Alberta’ game Feb. 4 at the Scotiabank Saddledome. The winner will get to bring 19 people with them, and the experience will include a meal for everyone and two beverages of their choice.
The draw will be made Jan. 15 at Caroline School.
Those interested in tickets can email carolineschoolenhancement@gmail.com.
Nutting says the group is deeply appreciative for how the community has stepped up — with local farmers challenging one another for who can make the biggest donation.
