It was a storybook season for West Central High School’s Grade 9 girls volleyball team, as they are CWAJHAA zone champions in the JJJ category.
Following a dominating season which saw the team go 30-1, the team capped it off with a championship win in Red Deer.
During the middle school tournament over the Nov. 22-23 weekend, the team was victorious in games against Red Deer schools St. Francis of Assisi Middle School, Lindsay Thurber and St. Lorenzo Ruiz, as well as Sylvan Lake’s H J Cody.
“They’re exceptionally dedicated and hardworking, they’re in the gym every day working really hard on their game,” says Justin Klein, West Central’s director of athletics. “They do a really good job playing for each other and taking advice from their coaches.”

It is the first time in the school’s history that it has won the JJJ CWAJHAA zone championship in volleyball — for boys and girls teams.
Before the tournament in Red Deer, Klein says the team ended the season as divisional champions, and also won multiple other tournaments throughout the year.
