Rocky Mountain House town council has pushed back a decision regarding the fate of an empty downtown lot.
The property, located at 4840 50 Street (Main St), is currently owned by the town after being acquired through the tax recovery program in March 2025.
Appraised at $41,000, the lot was previously offered for sale through a public auction in 2024, but did not attract any bids.
Administration presented council with several options, including selling the property or developing it into a park.
Deputy Mayor Dale Shippelt introduced a motion to defer a decision until the town’s strategic planning meeting in the fall of 2026, citing concerns about the potential budget impacts of any town-led development and the need for a more thorough discussion on the property’s value.
Administration noted that if a buyer expresses interest in the land before then, council could still choose to proceed with a sale.
Council unanimously supported the motion, pushing further discussion closer to the 2027 budget cycle.
The town previously stated the property was being sold on an “as is, where is” basis, with no guarantees regarding services, soil conditions, zoning, environmental contamination or future development potential.
