The popular Western Canadian Ribfest could be expanding to Rocky Mountain House in 2026.
Typical events feature three or four large rib trucks serving up ribs and tangy sauces to thousands of people, while families take in activities such as bouncy castles and live music.
For nearly 10 years, the festival has travelled across Western Canada — everywhere from Winnipeg to Yellowknife. However, Ribfest owner Paul Mendonca says those stops have typically been in larger communities such as Lethbridge, Red Deer and Cold Lake.
“This year we’re looking to expand to five smaller communities that haven’t seen a Ribfest,” he said. “If we get Rocky Mountain House, that will be six.”
Mendonca said stops in smaller communities would be slightly scaled back, with perhaps two rib trucks instead of the usual four. The five expansion communities are Chestermere, AB., North Battleford, SK., Revelstoke, B.C., and Hay River, N.W.T.

Even with a smaller festival, Mendonca calls it a “win-win,” saying not only do food truck operators benefit, but host communities also see economic spinoffs.
In many communities, Mendonca says Ribfest partners with local organizations such as Rotary Clubs who use their volunteers and connections to help with event setup and to organization. In return, they get to fundraise for local initiatives.
While the Rocky Mountain House event has not been confirmed, Mendonca said he has been in contact with potential partners and is optimistic the festival could go ahead in time for summer 2026.
In a social media post, Rocky Mountain House Mayor Shane Boniface also offered his support for bringing the tour to town.

The 2025 tour kicked off at the end of May in Winnipeg and wrapped up Sept. 21 in Swift Current.
Mendonca, who previously lived in Sylvan Lake and is familiar with the West Country, said he believes Rocky Mountain House would be enthusiastic about hosting a Ribfest event.
