After competing in an international Strongman competition in 2025, a local athlete is bringing the games to Rocky Mountain House in 2026.
This May, West Country residents can try their hands at events like keg over bar, overhead bar, deadlift, natural stone to shoulder, and others.
Organizer and Strongman competitor Tami Newman says those new to the sport are not only welcome, but encouraged to attend.
“I want to bring a novice women’s competition to Rocky to get more people involved in the sport,” says Newman. “It’s just for new competitors — the events are challenging, but they’re going to be fun”
Novice competitors are those who have been in no more than three competitions in the last two years, she says.
Newman says she gets a profound feeling of empowerment every time she competes, an experience she wants to share with as many people as possible.

The event will be hosted outdoors near the Rocky Regional Recreation Centre on May 23 starting at 12 p.m. — rain or shine.
Spectators are welcome to watch for free, and there will also be a charity BBQ on site with proceeds supporting the Mountain Rose Women’s Shelter.
Registration for participants is $60 and includes a comp shirt, along with some prizes and Strongman gear. Those who wish to sign up can contact Tami Newman at tnt.rockymtnhouse@gmail.com, as well as the Girls on The Rock Facebook page.
Newman, who is relatively new to the growing sport herself, says Strongman is a growing sport, and her passion is to spread the word about it.
“You don’t have to start early in life — I’m a late bloomer myself — and I believe anyone can start trying at anytime,” says Newman, who adds the sport features many different age categories.
Heading into 2026, Newman will be competing in an “Alberta’s Strongest” competition in Red Deer on April 11. She confirms she is once again training to compete in more international competitions later in 2026 including a return to the Official Strongman Games.
Newman encourages women to take a chance and sign up.
“I want people to not be afraid,” she says. “Throw caution to the wind, it’s for a good cause, and there will be women there cheering you on.”
