A special weather statement is in effect for parts of central Alberta, including the Rocky Mountain House and Crimson Lake areas, as well as Caroline and the James River Bridge region, stretching as far east as Stettler.
Heavy snow is expected to develop overnight and continue into Thursday, with poor travel conditions likely. Drivers along major routes, including Highway 2, could see reduced visibility and rapidly changing road conditions.
Snowfall amounts remain uncertain, but some areas could receive between five and 20 centimetres.
Conditions are expected to improve by Thursday evening, with warmer temperatures this weekend helping any snow melt quickly, improving travel conditions for the long weekend.
