Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a Snowfall Warning for parts of Clearwater County.
Affected areas include Rocky Mountain House, Crimson Lake, Nordegg, Big Horn Reserve, Caroline and James River Bridge, and Ya-Ha-Tinda Ranch.
Meteorologists say heavy snow is expected to intensify Wednesday night and will continue through Thursday for parts of central and southern Alberta.
Total amounts of 15 to 30 cm are anticipated.
Higher amounts, however, are most likely over the Hwy 9 corridor between Calgary and Coronation where upwards of 40 cm is possible.
Poor visibility due to blowing snow is also possible in some areas Wednesday night and Thursday morning, particularly east of Hwy 2 and toward the Saskatchewan border.
Snow is expected to end Thursday evening.
Officials say travel will likely be challenging and roads and walkways likely difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.
They add that visibility will likely be reduced at times and road closures are possible. Motorists are reminded to allow extra time for travel.
If driving, turn on your lights, slow down and maintain a safe following distance. Take frequent breaks and avoid strain when clearing snow.
