Rocky Mountain House’s Westland Dancing Co. had a strong showing at a provincial competition in Medicine Hat from April 17 to 19.
Competing against dancers from intensive programs across Alberta, the studio captured first place in the non-accelerated grand championship. Another group placed third overall in the non-accelerated division at the Great Canadian Dance Challenge.
The studio also won a grand championship at a competition in Olds earlier in April.
“It’s really cool to see how our kids hold their own in these competitions,” said instructor Keanna Campbell, who credited founders Victoria Edwards and Alyssa Landry for building a program where dancers can thrive.
Campbell said students in the non-accelerated program train about two to three hours per week, while those in the accelerated stream often practise six or seven days a week.
“It’s pretty cool that Rocky Mountain House can look back and say our dance studio is putting up some big numbers and producing some pretty amazing dancers,” she said. “I think the kids should be very proud.”

The program, which began nearly a decade ago, is open to dancers aged one to 18 and also offers adult classes. It has since expanded to Sylvan Lake and now includes about 300 dancers across the two communities.
Two competitions remain in the 2026 season, including an event in Sherwood Park in early May and the finale at the Red Deer Resort and Casino from May 9 to 10.
The group is also fundraising for a 2027 trip to Disneyland, where dancers hope to perform in the annual Halloween parade.
