For the first time, the Town of Rocky Mountain House will observe the voluntary No Mow May initiative.
The idea was first raised by Mayor Shane Boniface at an April 7 council meeting.
The initiative encourages residents to delay mowing in the spring to support bees and other beneficial insects.
Boniface said insects such as ladybugs help control aphids, and allowing lawns and leaf cover to remain longer can support early-season activity.
“I think just as many people are concerned about environmental issues as having perfectly manicured lawns,” he said.
Deputy Mayor Dale Shippelt raised concerns about the town’s appearance, noting uncut lawns and dandelions could affect impressions during the May long weekend.
He also questioned whether public works crews should delay mowing ditches and green spaces. Chief administrative officer Dean Krause suggested maintaining highly visible areas, such as entrance signs, while holding off in some parks.
Coun. Ken Moesker said he supported the initiative, noting it is voluntary with no penalties for residents who choose to mow.
Council unanimously approved promoting No Mow May at its April 21 meeting.
