A wildfire located north of Rocky Mountain House is now under control.
Observed May 7 near the junction of Hwy 22 and Hwy 12, the wildfire was approximately 13 hectares in size. Alberta Wildfire officials say it is now being held.
Firefighters remain on scene and continue working toward extinguishment. The public is being advised of increased activity in the area as Rocky Mountain House Forest Area staff, helicopters and municipal firefighters continue suppression efforts.
Since January 1, 2026, the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area has responded to 34 wildfires.
Fire advisory
A fire advisory continues to be in effect for the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area. Under this advisory:
- Existing fire permits are valid, but extension requests may not be granted.
- New fire permits will be issued on a case-by-case basis, for essential burning only.
- Safe campfires are allowed.
A more restrictive Fire Restriction is in effect for the non-Forest Protection Area of the county — primarily east of Rocky Mountain House.
Visit Alberta Fire Bans for more information to see the advisory area on a map.
CRFRS warns of hazardous conditions
Officials with Clearwater Regional Fire Rescue Services say the hazardous conditions are a “perfect recipe” of a colder-than-average spring that has delayed grass from greening up, combined with sudden heat and strong winds that have left vegetation dry and exposed.
Even though safe wood campfires are still allowed in the West Country, fire prevention officer Michael Vanderbaaren recommends residents put off burning altogether, particularly in windy conditions.
Visit Alberta Fire Bans for more information on fire restrictions across the region.
