Residents are encouraged to give unwanted household items a second life as Kick It to the Curb returns June 13 and 14.
The town-wide event promotes waste reduction and reuse by inviting residents to place unwanted but usable items at the front of their properties, clearly marked with a “FREE” sign. Community members can then explore neighbourhoods and pick up items they would like to take home.
“It is a way to encourage residents to reduce the waste headed to landfills,” says Laura Button, communications coordinator with the town of Rocky Mountain House. “It gets more and more popular every year with people curbside shopping.”
Treasures often found during the event include books, DVDs, board games, furniture, small appliances, construction materials, kitchenware, craft supplies and more.
Organizers remind participants to clearly label giveaway items and keep any belongings they wish to retain away from the curb. Residents browsing for treasures are asked to only take items marked as free.
Any unclaimed items must be removed from the curb after the weekend and either brought back inside or disposed of responsibly.
To help with cleanup, waste disposal fees at the Eco Centre will once again be waived from June 16 to 20, with the exception of mattresses and appliances containing freon.
