Citing online criticism, personal attacks, harassment and abusive messages directed at volunteers, the Sundre Pro Rodeo has cancelled its annual parade.
In a statement, parade organizers said a parade entry was initially denied participation, generating what it described as “strong opinions from many individuals.” Although organizers later reversed the decision, apologized and invited the entry to participate, they said hostility toward volunteers continued.
The statement added that the increasingly hostile and politically charged environment led some parade participants to withdraw.
Originally scheduled for Saturday, June 20, organizers said the parade was cancelled because ongoing attacks on volunteers created an environment not conducive to holding the event.
“As the situation continued to escalate, it became clear that the focus had shifted away from celebrating our community and toward division and conflict,” the statement said.
Questions remain about parade entry
The Sundre Pro Rodeo did not identify the parade entry in question or explain why it was initially denied participation.
Various comments on the organization’s social media pages described the entry as an Alberta flag-themed float, although organizers did not confirm that characterization and had not responded to a request for clarification by publication time.
Some commenters further argued the float was intended as an expression of provincial pride rather than support for a political cause.
In its statement, the rodeo association emphasized that the cancellation is not a statement about any political viewpoint, movement or cause, adding it respects the right of individuals to hold differing opinions.
Reaction online was mixed. Some expressed disappointment over the loss of what many consider a family-favourite community tradition, while others supported the decision, arguing volunteer safety and well-being should take priority.
Rodeo events to continue
The rodeo association stressed that all other rodeo events will proceed as scheduled.
Gates open at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, June 18, with junior barrel racing, mutton busting and wild pony racing scheduled ahead of the main rodeo performance at 7 p.m.
Friday’s events begin with vendors and concessions opening at 4:30 p.m., followed by the rodeo at 7 p.m. and the crowning of a new Miss Rodeo Sundre. A fireworks display is also planned following the rodeo, weather and fire restrictions permitting.
Saturday’s activities include a pancake breakfast at the Freson Bros. parking lot before rodeo events begin at the grounds. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to promote cancer awareness.
Sunday begins with a cowboy church service at 10 a.m. and will include the presentation of championship buckles. Organizers also plan to recognize Indigenous Peoples Day and salute fathers.
