Crime Severity Index in Rocky Mountain House area drops to lowest level since 2017

A significant drop in crime severity for the Rocky Mountain House area.

A July 2026 Statistics Canada report shows the Crime Severity Index (CSI) for Rocky Mountain House was 156.6 in 2025.

That’s down 21 per cent from the 2024 rate of 199.9.

Last year marked the lowest CSI since 2017, when it was 157.7. The index peaked in Rocky in 2020 at 232.2.

The top three drivers of the year-over-year decrease were one fewer homicide, 36 fewer break and enters and 220 fewer reported incidents of mischief to property.

However, there were 14 more reports of criminal harassment and 38 more reports of disturbing the peace.

The top five contributors to the local CSI in 2025 were assault (24 per cent), homicide (15 per cent), break and enter (14 per cent), theft of motor vehicles (6.3 per cent) and possession of stolen goods (5.5 per cent).

The CSI accounts for both the number of police-reported incidents and the severity of those offences. Each type of offence is assigned a weight to reflect its level of severity.

Despite the drop, Rocky Mountain House’s CSI remains 42 per cent above the provincial average.

Alberta’s overall CSI in 2025 was 90.6, down 6.6 per cent from 2024.

Red Deer has highest CSI among Alberta cities

In Red Deer, the overall Crime Severity Index fell from 118.35 to 114.36, a decrease of 3.4 per cent.

However, Red Deer had the highest CSI among Alberta’s major cities. Edmonton’s was 95.55, while Calgary’s was 61.66 and Lethbridge’s was 107.69.

The Canadian Press reported that Canada’s Crime Severity Index declined in every province and territory except New Brunswick and Nunavut, as well as in most major cities, in 2025.
