West Country residents are invited to a free outdoor movie — or two — under the summer sky as part of Alberta Day celebrations in Rocky Mountain House on Aug. 30.

Organized by Rocky Mountain House’s Community Events Committee, the evening will feature a double bill on the big screen at Curtis Field. The family-friendly The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will be shown at 7 p.m., followed by the 1980s John Candy classic The Great Outdoors at 9 p.m.

Free popcorn will be available to all attendees, while vendors will also be on site for those looking for additional movie snacks.

The committee was once again successful in securing a $5,000 grant from the Alberta government to help put on the event.

It’s the third consecutive year for the outdoor movie, says Community Events Committee chair Tina Hutchinson, who adds more than 300 people attended last year’s event.

With the Lions Club Demolition Derby also taking place Aug. 30, Hutchinson says organizers decided to hold the movie event in the evening so it wouldn’t interfere with the community’s other non-profit event.

Last year’s celebration included several afternoon activities in addition to the outdoor movie.

“We’re hoping to get a big turnout and have some fun while we’re out there,” Hutchinson says.
