Rocky’s Mountain Rose Women’s Shelter will receive $51,000 from the Alberta government to support people fleeing domestic abuse, as part of a $2.5 million investment in services for those affected by gender-based violence.
The grant will help cover a range of client needs, including legal assistance, child care, emotional support and transportation.
Lorelai Duguid, Pathway to Justice co-ordinator with the Mountain Rose Centre, says the funding will also support her ongoing work at the shelter, where she helps clients liaise with RCMP, lawyers and the Alberta government.
Duguid also helps clients navigate the paperwork and processes involved in applying for support through Legal Aid Alberta.
“This funding is really helpful, and we’re very thankful,” says Duguid, who helped support 43 clients last year.
The funding will support 36 community organizations across Alberta working to address gender-based violence. Of those, 14 are in Calgary, seven in Edmonton, four in southern Alberta, seven in central Alberta and four in northern Alberta.
Grants range from $15,000 to $150,000 and will fund services such as justice-system navigation, safety planning, crisis intervention and restorative justice programming.

“Real progress on gender-based violence happens when governments, service providers and advocates work together,” says Tanya Fir, Minister of Arts, Culture and Status of Women. “By investing in the people and organizations leading this work across Alberta, we are helping those affected.”
The funding comes through the province’s Community Pathways to Justice grant program and supports Alberta’s 10-year strategy to end gender-based violence.
The strategy aims to strengthen community-based responses, improve access to support services and help people affected by gender-based violence navigate the justice system.
