The Town of Rocky Mountain House will attempt to sell a long-vacant lot on Main Street.
The property, located at 4840 50 Street across from Rocky Cinemas, is currently owned by the town after being acquired through the tax recovery program in March 2025.
At its Nov. 3 regular meeting, council opted to contract a local real estate company for a six-month period to list and sell the lot at its 2026 assessed value of $41,000.
There will also be a number of conditions attached to any successful sale.
Within three years of the closing date, the buyer must either obtain development approvals for the construction of a commercial building or have construction of the building reach at least the lock-up stage.
Initially, the town had proposed retaining $25,000 as a pre-estimate of damages if the buyer failed to build within three years. However, council raised concerns that the amount could scare away potential buyers and opted to reduce the sum to $10,000.
Coun. Dale Shippelt suggested the town could wait another year, saying maintaining the lot is not a significant burden and any potential tax revenue from its sale would be negligible.
Deputy Mayor Trevor Kalyn said council has been discussing the lot for years and suggested the time to move forward is now.
Ultimately, the town chose administration’s recommendation to put the property up for sale.
Another option of developing the land into a community green space was not considered by council.
