The MLA for Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre has a new government position.
Jason Nixon, the now soon to be former Minister of Environment and Parks, will now chair the Economy and Affordability Cabinet Policy Committee.
Nixon says he is excited for the opportunity.
“The biggest issues facing our province right now are around things like inflation, affordability issues and our economy and making sure we can continue to create the jobs that we have,” explains Nixon. As a result, Nixon acknowledges he’s super excited to have a front and centre role in what are considered to be the biggest issues in the province currently.
Looking back on his time as the Minister of Environment and Parks, Nixon says if he had to choose one highlight from his time in the position, it would be the work that’s been done to the West Country. Nixon notes it was one of his highest priorities, addressing the concerns in his own backyard.
“We’ve been able to bring in way more sustainable systems in the West Country including more enforcement, and I know people are starting to see significant infrastructure upgrades taking place west of Rocky Mountain House,” says Nixon.
He says his main focus right away with his new role is affordability issues.
“More specifically to bring a lens of the unique affordability issues that we face in rural Alberta. Obviously a focus on trying to manage the global inflation problem and then making sure we can continue to drive the economic development to make Alberta the best place to come and build a business, grow a family and to live,” he explains.
“We have to make sure we’re ready to build on the success that we’ve been able to create,” adds Nixon. “The economic renaissance is taking place in Alberta and get ready for this upcoming election and be able to make sure to have a conversation about how were going to make sure Alberta is going to continue to lead this country both economically as well as with things like quality of life. That’s what my focus will be as your MLA and I hope that will be the government’s focus in the coming months.”
