After back to back wins the previous weekend, the Rocky Rams were back in action over the weekend looking to extend their tw-game winning streak to start the New Year.
On Friday, the Mountainview Colts rolled into town for a date with the Rams and came away with a 4-3 victory.
The Rams found the back of the net just 36 seconds into the first period, however, after a Jake Smith goal, with assists coming from Grady Mofford and Reid Christiansen. The lead for the Rams was short lived though as the Colts would tie the game up 1-1 after Nate McNeely scored at 13:37, with Simon Leischner getting the lone assist. The Colts would end up taking the lead 2-1, 16:43 into the period after a shorthanded goal from Steven Bell. However, just before the end of the period, Jake Smith would score his second goal of the game for the Rams to tie it up 2-2, this one on the powerplay, with Nick Jervis and Grady Mofford gathering the assists.
The second period saw the Colts reclaim the lead 3-2 after a Jay Heistad goal, with Carter Layden and Nate McNeely getting the assists. The Rams kept fighting to tie the game 3-3 and it payed off after Kyle Goodrunning found the back of the net for his ninth goal of the year, assisted by Tristan Hoffus and Nick Jervis.
In the third period, Colts defenseman Trey Stovin received a 5 minute cross checking penalty and a 10 minute game misconduct. However, the Rams couldn’t capitalize on the powerplay. Despite being shorthanded in the final period, the Colts still managed to outshoot the Rams 14-10. With no goals in the third period this game would head into overtime.
Not long into the overtime period, the Colts Logan Richards would score the game winning goal at 2:16, assisted by Corson Waiting and Jordan Saunders for a final score of 4-3.

After the overtime loss on Friday, the Rams were looking to bounce back with a win against the Coaldale Copperheads on Saturday.
The Rams would strike first after a Tristan Hoffus goal, assisted by the captain Nick Jervis and Noah Wilson. Hoffus’s goal would be the only goal in the first 20 minutes, despite the Rams getting outshot 19-4.
The second period was all Rams, outshooting the Copperheads 16-11. The Rams would also improve their lead to 2-0 after Cale Stecyk got an unassisted goal at 15:38 in the period. The Rams would keep up the pressure with Kyle Goddrunning finding the back of the net at 16:49, and Caleb Andrew and Jakob Weimer getting the assists. As time was expiring in the second frame, Owen Green would score his fourth goal of the year at 19:33 with assists coming from Bryn Hoiland and Quinn Tomalty, giving the Rams a 4-0 lead heading into the final period.
Caden Heins of the Copperheads would finally solve Rams goalie Zaiden Hansen in the third period on the powerplay, with the assist coming off the stick of Tristan Miller, cutting the Rams lead to 4-1. However, Jake Smith of the Rams would put the icing on the cake with an empty net goal at 18:09, with assists coming from Kyle Goodrunning and Grady Mofford.
The Rams would skate away with a 5-1 win. Rams Goalie Zaiden Hansen would have a great game between the pipes, stopping 50 of the 51 shots he faced.
After the weekend, the Rams sit in fourth place in the Heritage Junior Hockey League’s Northern Division with a record of 10-17-4.
The Rams are back in action Friday when they head into Airdrie for a game against the Techmation Thunder, puck drop is at 8:00 p.m. at the Ron Ebbesen Arena.
