New trial dates have been scheduled for a man from O’Chiese First Nation charged in relation to a stabbing on the Sunchild Road last year.
Michael Mackinaw, 39, is now scheduled for trial in Red Deer Court of King’s Bench from Nov. 14-17, 2023. He was previously scheduled for trial in Rocky Mountain House Court of Justice on March 13, 2023.
Mackinaw is charged with aggravated assault and two counts of fail to comply with a release order in relation to the events that took place on Feb. 9, 2022.
He was also charged with assault with a weapon, possession of stolen property over $5,000, and two counts of failure to comply with a release order, in relation to events which began on Feb. 8, 2022.
Mackinaw was previously scheduled for trial on those counts on Nov. 22, 2022, but the trial was dismissed.
It was on Feb. 8, 2022, when RCMP had said they were investigating an incident where a suspect was driving a vehicle on the O’Chiese First Nation, when the suspect and a passenger had a verbal confrontation. The suspect allegedly threatened the passenger — the owner of the vehicle — with a weapon.
At about 8 p.m. the following day, RCMP in Rocky Mountain House responded to a 911 call about a male who had reportedly been stabbed on the Sunchild Road. That man was taken to hospital by STARS.
The suspect was arrested at a later time, after warrants had been issued.
