The Town of Rocky Mountain House is doing a residential waste audit this month.
Town officials say, they are currently in the process of analyzing its curbside recycling and green and black cart programs with a goal of confirming the number of people participating in waste collection programs, how much recyclable and compostable material is being properly recycled and being placed in the carts, and what waste is being improperly placed in the garbage.
According to the Town, this information will be used to determine the success of curbside waste and waste diversion programs in Rocky.
In order to do this, Town officials note it is necessary to examine and sort the waste that is currently being placed for curbside recycling, and green and black cart collection.
The Town of Rocky Mountain House hired Sonnevera International Corp. to perform the residential waste audit. It’s staff collected waste materials from a random sampling of houses during the first two weeks of July.
Residents were not notified this audit would be conducted to ensure that individual waste habits were not inadvertently altered.
Waste collected for the audit will be sorted by material type, weighed and disposed of in its correct waste stream.
Council will then review the findings of the 2023 residential waste audit results to inform its next steps in the Town’s Waste Reduction Strategy.
The actual homes from which the waste is collected will not be identified in the audit report; as all waste material is aggregated to get overall results for the Town.
