Due to frazil ice conditions in the North Saskatchewan River, the Water Treatment Plant in Rocky Mountain House is experiencing intake blockages.
Frazil ice is described as a natural phenomenon that occurs in open water during very cold temperatures. Town officials say tiny ice crystals form throughout the whole water column and accumulate on solid surfaces such as the water treatment plant’s intake line.
Town officials say this is limiting water production.
The town is asking bulk haulers for their cooperation to haul only for potable and emergency use at this time.
Officials add operators will monitor river conditions and water production. Town officials note further restrictions or closure may be necessary as the extreme weather is expected to continue through the weekend.
The Town thanks everyone for their cooperation.
