Sundre & Caroline high school students interested in health care careers recently had the opportunity to experience a variety of health care related roles first hand at Sundre High School.
Organized by local health care professionals, a hands-on day of activities allowed students to learn about health care related tasks such as airway intubation, cardiac treatment, x-rays lab technician work, suturing, pharmacy, dental hygiene and other career options.
“We teach anatomy and physiology in biology class. We teach about health care systems in social studies. We even teach about careers in high school” says Sundre High School teacher Corynn Sande, “When students experience health care skills day, based right here in Sundre, we see them making connections between their school learning and the real world. That’s exciting”.
Health Care Skills Day, as it’s known, was started by a partnership between Sundre Health Professional Attraction & Retention Committee (SHPARC) and the Rural Health Professions Action Plan (RhPAP). The organizations devoted to rural healthcare professional retention are now also inspiring the next generation of health care professionals.
