A local organization that aims to support Indigenous people in the area is hosting a free Day Of Friendship event at it’s Rocky Mountain House location (4917 52 St Cl.) on June 7.
Officials with the Asokewin Friendship Centre says its mission is to bring cultures together in a meaningful way and create a space for people to have conversations around Indigenous history and worldviews.
To that end, executive director Melissa Turatus says the entire community is invited to a come-and-see style event to find out more about the organization.
“Very simple and casual,” says Turatus. “Just come on into the centre. We’re excited to highlight our programs and build relationships with community members.”
The event will run 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will feature a BBQ, cake, and music.
Turatus adds, friendship day is celebrated across Canada at 121 Friendship Centres nationally, including 21 in Alberta.
Along with the Day Of Friendship, the Asokewin Friendship Centre is also putting on the Four Elements wellness retreat at the Rocky Mountain House National Historic Site.
Turatus says interest in the retreat was overwhelming.
“Unfortunately, we’re functioning from a wait list right now,” says Turatus.
She adds, the hope is to do more wellness retreat weekends for men and women in the future which feature fun activities as well as facilitating well-being information sessions.
