Thanks to several wildfires burning in the area, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued an Air Quality Advisory for the Rocky Mountain House region.
According to the advisory, wildfire smoke is causing or expected to cause very poor air quality and reduced visibility. Officials say air quality and visibility due to wildfire smoke can fluctuate over short distances and can vary considerably from hour to hour.
Among the wildfires burning in the West Country region, government sources say two are classified as out of control.
Wildfire RWF-068-2024 burning approximately 13 km West of Nordegg, is classified as out of control.
Another out of control wildfire is RWF-064-2024. It is located approximately 30 km south of Nordegg near the Forestry Trunk Rd.
A third wildfire west of Caroline near Tay River Provincial Park Recreation Area is classified as being held.
Due to the wildfire activity, Clearwater County officials say Hwy. 734 is closed from the corner of Hwy. 752 southwest of Rocky Mountain House up to Hwy. 11 near Nordegg.
As of Aug. 1, government officials say there are currently 116 active wildfires in Alberta.
