A new name is in the works for the arena complex in Rocky Mountain House.
During this week’s council meeting, Wes Amendt, Director of Recreation and Community Services for the Town of Rocky Mountain House, went before council to ask for their thoughts on future names for the arena. Amendt has been working with the former named sponsor of the recreation centre throughout the past year and a half, but due to their financial situation, are no longer able to continue with their sponsorship.
Amendt came to council with names in hand that included:
• Rocky Regional Recreation Centre
• Rocky Sports & Wellness Centre
• David Thompson Wellness Centre
Admendt is also wanting to add the Clearwater County logo and logo of the Town of Rocky Mountain House to the facility.
Mayor Debbie Baich and Councillor Len Phillips both really liked the idea of the word Rocky being used in the name, with Councillor Phillips stating, “People from other communities, whether its Cochrane, Edmonton or Calgary, the first word they are going to Google will more than likely be Rocky. Both the mayor and many members of council also liked the idea of having the Clearwater County logo and the Rocky Mountain House logo attached to the building as well.
Councillor Merrin Fraser added, “The streets of Nordegg just did a public engagement campaign were people put forward or voted on various street names and it turned out to be very successful on getting people engaged and people seemed really happy with the names.” Fraser suggested putting out a survey to get some ideas from people in the community, but it was determined there would not be enough time to conduct a survey.
At the end of the discussion, council put forward a motion to rename the arena complex to the “Rocky Regional Recreation Centre”, which was approved.
