An annual door-to-door food and fundraiser benefitting Rocky’s Mountain Rose Centre returns Sept. 21.
Residents in Rocky are asked to keep an eye open for specially-marked bags to be dropped off at their homes between Sept. 18-20.
Once received, organizers say residents are then invited to fill the bags full of donations for the local women’s shelter.
Organized by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, volunteers will collect the filled bags starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21.
The initiative, which has been run for more than 10 years, has had tremendous buy-in from the community, says Cindy Easton, executive director of the Mountain Rose Centre.
“The community is so supportive. We have had some really good years, and other years where it’s not as good,” says Easton. “But overall, there’s always support.”
Easton adds the need for donations is fairly urgent, as the organization is not immune to ballooning operating costs.
“Our food costs have certainly doubled over the last few years,” says Easton. “All these contributions [are] a blessing to us.”
Along with food donations, items such as toiletries, cleaning products, new underwear, and shampoo & conditioner can be put in the bags, says Easton.
If, for whatever reason, someone doesn’t receive a bag on their front door, Easton says donations to the Mountain Rose Centre will still be gratefully accepted the following week.

During the fall season, cash and warm clothing donations will be accepted at the centre, says Easton; as well, a dinner theatre production of Resort To Murder is set to take place Nov. 9 at the Lou Soppit Community Centre
Located at 4708 46 St. in Rocky Mountain House, the Mountain Rose Centre operates a 28-bed emergency shelter, a five-apartment second-stage accommodation, a housing support program, outreach services, and women’s support groups, among other local services.
