Keynote speakers will be addressing life’s successes, opportunities, and many challenges as Rocky Mountain House’s Peer 2 Peer Network will be hosting a free, Women’s Empowerment Conference on Sept. 21 at Dovercourt Hall.
The event has been billed by organizers as a single-day conference, by women, for women, concentrating on women’s wellness.
All volunteers, attendees and vendors are all women, say organizers.
The day will feature two keynote speakers, says Dustyanne Evans, vice president for the Rocky Peer to Peer Network.
First up is musician and CBC Television host, Lisette Xaivier. As host of the CBC Kids program Bestest Day Ever With My Best Friend, Xaivier will be sharing her experience working in the arts all across Canada.
The second keynote is actually herself, says Evans.
“I’ll be talking about living with mental illness,” says Evans. “So basically the morning session (with Xaivier) is all about empowerment, skills building and education. The afternoon is going to be like about mental health.”
Evans says many have signed up, but there are still some free tickets available.
While the organization was initially charging for tickets, Evans says they decided to make the tickets free so as many as possible could attend the event.
Additionally, while the ticket deadline was originally Sept. 13, Evans says it’s been expended to right before the event.
The event will feature a catered lunch, as well as snacks throughout the day.
Ultimately, Evans hopes that women walk away from the conference feeling more empowered, and having learned some new healthy living skills.
As far as vendors, Evans says one woman will be talking about farming and homesteading, while others will be focusing on mental health, and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), among other topics.
Evans says the organization’s mission is to help those in the community with mental health and other issues with trained support people and referrals to other organizations.
Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21, with the conference running until about 5 p.m.
Dovercourt Hall is located about 20 minutes south of Rocky Mountain House on Hwy. 22.
