That crisp, early feel of autumn is officially in the air, and West Country bargain hunters will be taking to the streets of Rocky Mountain House Sept. 21-22 to score free items on residents’ front lawns.
Held every spring and fall, Kick It To Curb has been a well received program among residents for years, say Rocky Mountain House Town officials.
Residents are encouraged to put unwanted, gently used items in front of their properties with a clearly marked ‘free’ sign so neighbors can claim them on a first-come-first serve basis. Printable ‘free’ signs can be found here.
Laura Button, communications coordinator with the Town of Rocky Mountain House says the program is a win-win for the community.
“It is a way to encourage residents to reduce the waste headed to landfills,” says Button. “It gets more and more popular every year with people curbside shopping.”
As an added bonus for those doing some fall cleaning, Button says the excess garbage fee at the Rocky Eco Centre will be waived for the following week for any items not claimed during Kick it to the Curb.
Exceptions are appliances that use freon and mattresses, in which the regular excess fees will apply.
According to the Town’s website, ideas for donations can be books, DVDs, board games, kitchen gadgets, old furniture, small appliances and surplus craft supplies.
Button adds that any items not claimed by the end of the weekend be brought back into residents homes.
Kick It To The Curb runs Saturday Sept. 21 and Sunday Sept. 22.
