A pump track could be on the way for Rocky Mountain House, but the main concern is trying to find a location for it.
Described as a mountain bike and BMX style track, Wes Amendt, Director of Recreation and Community Services for the Town of Rocky Mountain House, says they have four locations in mind for a pump track in the community.
According to Amendt, those locations include Riverside Park, Riverview Park, Wild Rose Park and Centennial Park. However, Amendt and the pump track group have picked a fifth location – the current dog park in Rocky.
Amendt says both he and the pump track group like the dog park idea, noting it’s size of 6700 square metres. He says the site meets all the requirements suggested by one of the contractors that does this type of work. Amendt says this idea would also mean the Town would have to find a new location for the dog park in Rocky which has yet to be determined if the pump track was established there.
Amendt says the pump track group also likes the idea of the dog park location because of how much parking there is.
“There is also public washrooms on site and it does have exposure off of Highway 11, so people driving by can also see it,” said Amendt.
Councillor Len Phillips added, “I don’t know how many comments I’ve heard about our current dog park not being up to snuff, so this could address that issue, as well as the pump track issue.”
Council’s concern, however, is the potential lack of parking for a pump track at the current dog park location. Councillor Shane Boniface notes the potential for parking spillover into the nearby Rocky Regional Recreation Centre parking lot.
“Anybody that has ever attended a funeral at the community centre during the summer knows that you often can’t get into the service because of how many recreation vehicles around that area.”
At the end of the meeting, council agreed to not choose a location for the pump track yet, but instead, agreed to talk about it again at a later date before they commit to a final location for the pump track.
