A program that aimed to streamline grant applications for community clubs and organizations is dead after the Town of Rocky Mountain House voted to rescind its Community Grants Policy bylaw.
The policy had two main components: grants for community groups and events within the town, and waivers for rental fees at town-operated facilities.
Since it was introduced, 23 requests had been reviewed under the policy, with 21 approved and two denied, amounting to $12,500 in support for community events and $7,500 in waived rental fees.
The move comes after a review of the program during the town’s Service Level Review. During the review, it was realized that funds could be better used to expand community events through the existing Community Events Committee and enhance support for organizations via the Support Funding Policy.
The decision to rescind the policy, which was finalized with a vote during the regular council meeting on Dec. 17, 2024, reflects changes already reflected in the 2025 budget and the town’s approach to funding community initiatives.
Going forward, any organization with a funding request will be informed that the town no longer has a granting program. However, delegations may still appear before council with formal funding requests.
In a separately passed bylaw during the same meeting, however, it was resolved that community groups holding Remembrance Day Services at town facilities will be able to do free of charge going forward.
