Two local youth have been recognized for their positive actions in the community through the town’s Positive Ticket Program, which rewards good behavior and encourages positive interactions with law enforcement.
For 2023, Serenity C, 8, was named the grand prize winner, followed by Lucas B, 6, who received the honor for 2024. Both children were recognized for their positive actions in the community, including wearing helmets while biking and helping neighbors with chores.
Kayla Whissell, a community peace officer with Rocky Mountain House Protective Services, explained that the initiative, running since 2019, aims to highlight and reward young people who demonstrate good behavior, such as helping neighbors, staying active, and making safe choices.
The grand prize for the winners is a special package of prizes donated by local community sponsors, tailored to the child’s interests. Whissell said this year’s prizes included outdoor equipment, coloring supplies, and sporting gear to keep the kids active and engaged.
“Serenity and Lucas both stood out for their kindness and safe practices,” said Whissell. “Serenity was seen using a crosswalk safely, and Lucas helped a neighbor while wearing his helmet.”
The Positive Ticket Program will be returning this summer, with law enforcement officers handing out tickets to children demonstrating good behavior, including using manners, being a role model, and participating in community activities. More than 300 tickets are typically distributed each year, with prizes such as movie passes and gift certificates, all made possible by generous local donations.
“The youth are really starting to look out for these tickets now. They’ll often stop us and ask if they can get one for wearing their helmet or helping someone,” Whissell said. “It’s great to see them eagerly participating in the program, and it’s a wonderful way to build positive relationships between law enforcement and the community.”
As the program grows in popularity, Whissell says she and the team are excited to continue recognizing the youth of Rocky Mountain House for their contributions and good deeds.
