Following a “widespread” data breach involving education software PowerSchool, Wild Rose School Division (WRSD) has announced it will be offering those affected two years of complimentary identity protection and and credit monitoring services.
In an e-mail obtained by 94.5 Rewind Radio News, Brad Volkman, superintendent of WRSD updated parents and educators on the situation, informing those whose information was potentially involved that they will be eligible for the services from TransUnion and Experian.
The protection will also be available to students involved in the breach who have since reached the age of majority.
Starting in the next few weeks, the update says PowerSchool will provide notice to students, parents/guardians and educators (as applicable) whose information was involved, as well as a phone number to answer any questions you may have about the incident. The notice will include the identity protection and credit monitoring services offer as applicable.
The breach not only affected WRSD, but school divisions across Canada including Red Deer Public School Division (RDPSD), Red Deer Catholic School Division (RDCRS), Wolf Creek Public Schools, among others.
According to a Jan. 7 update, vulnerable information included:
- Student names
- Student mailing addresses
- Dates of birth – students only
- Student home phone numbers
- Basic student medical information (in some cases), such as details about asthma, diabetes, or allergies
According to the update, PowerSchool is not aware of any identity theft attributable to this incident. As of Jan. 27, 2025, it also says there is no evidence that credit card or banking information was involved.
PowerSchool has also set up an information portal on the breach which can be found here.
