Crimson Lake Winterfest is set to make a splash on Saturday, Feb. 15, offering a fun-filled day of winter activities for the whole family, including the highly anticipated Freezin’ For A Reason Polar Bear Dip.
Held at Pioneer Ranch in Crimson Lake Provincial Park, the event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
A variety of outdoor activities have been planned, including sleigh rides courtesy of the West Country Harness Association, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating, pond hockey, and ice fishing demonstrations hosted by Alberta Parks conservation officers.
“We’ve got a great lineup this year, from sleigh rides to ice fishing, and even a pet adoption event with puppies looking for homes,” said organizer Aaron Townsend. “There’s something for everyone, and we’re excited to have the community join us for a day of winter fun.”
One of the highlights of the event is the Freezin’ For A Reason Polar Bear Dip, where participants take a chilly plunge into the lake to raise funds for various local causes. The event has been a staple of Winterfest for the past seven years, and this year, with sponsorship from Rocky Credit Union and Evergreen Co-op, registration fees have been reduced.
Adults can participate for just $10, while youth aged 16 and 17 can join the dip for free, provided they have a parent or guardian present.
Rocky Search and Rescue, the Rocky Library, The Rocky Organization for Animal Rescue (ROAR), STARS Air Ambulance, as well as local youth initiatives. A minimum of $100 must be raised to participate in the dip, with prizes awarded for top fundraisers and best costumes.

Prizes will be awarded for top fundraisers and best costumes, with special awards for those who go above and beyond in their fundraising efforts. The person who raises the most money will win a 30-minute flight for two in a Cessna, and other prizes which include Alberta Parks passes, a camper ship donated by Pioneer Ranch, and various community donations.
New this year is a Winterfest passport, encouraging participants to try as many activities as possible for a chance to win even more prizes. Attendees can get their passports stamped at different activity stations and enter for a chance to win items like a giant teddy bear, parks passes, and more.
The Asokewin Friendship Centre from Rocky Mountain House will also be on hand displaying Indigenous art and hosting axe throwing.
In addition to the outdoor festivities, there will be food available on-site at Pioneer Ranch, with pay-what-you-can pricing to ensure everyone can enjoy a meal, says Townsend. The venue will also feature a photo booth to capture memories of the day.
For those looking to take the Polar Bear Dip, registration is open until 5 p.m. on Feb. 14. Participants can sign up by emailing rockyfreezin@outlook.com.
It’s set to be a fun Family Day Weekend in the West Country, as the town of Rocky Mountain House also has planned events at the Curtis Field skating oval on Feb. 17.
