The Rural Municipalities of Alberta (RMA) is offering valuable resources and support to Albertans considering running for municipal office in the upcoming 2025 election.
In partnership with Alberta Municipalities (AB Munis) and Alberta Municipal Affairs, the RMA has launched an educational campaign to provide prospective candidates with a comprehensive introduction to municipal governance. The initiative aims to inform individuals about the daily responsibilities, expectations, and rewards of serving on municipal councils.
Clearwater County Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Rick Emmons highlighted the importance of this campaign, which will offer Albertans a chance to learn about what municipal leadership entails.
“The collaboration will provide prospective candidates and Albertans at large with a comprehensive and authentic introduction to municipal service, highlighting everything from daily responsibilities to the role of municipal elected official to how to run for office,” Emmons said.
As part of the initiative, the RMA will host a series of upcoming public webinars where individuals can gain insights, ask questions, and learn about the realities of municipal service. According to the RMA website, more information about these webinars will be announced in the coming weeks.
In a video that supplements the initiative, leaders from around the province gave some input.
Kara Westerlund, Brazeau County councillor and RMA president says once elected, it can be hard to disconnect from your role, and your “councillor hat” is always on.
Tyler Gandam, mayor of Wetaskiwin and president of AB Munis, says that prospective candidates should be prepared to spend a lot of time reading and pouring over documents in preparation for meetings.
Amber Link, reeve of Wheatland County cautioned that challenges facing municipalities are often complex, but the work is worth it, and encouraged those feeling the pull toward politics to put their name forward.
With the municipal election set for Oct. 20, 2025, this campaign offers an opportunity for anyone considering a run for local office to prepare, ask questions, and understand what it takes to serve their community effectively.
AB Munis and the RMA are also set to release a candidate toolkit later in 2025. Click here for more frequently asked questions and information on the initiative .
Local candidates can pick up a candidate package at Clearwater County offices in Rocky Mountain House and Caroline.
