The Rocky Rams have advanced to the Heritage Junior Hockey League’s quarter finals following a 5-4 overtime win over the Wranglers in Sylvan Lake on Saturday.
In the first period the Rams would start off on the wrong foot when Brett Westin of the Wranglers opened up the scoring at 2:17 giving the Wranglers a 1-0 lead. The Rams would then come to life when Captain Nick Jervis got his fourth goal of the playoffs with a pass from Silas Buijs, notching the first goal for the Rams and evening up the score 1-1. The Rams would keep up the pressure, when Kyle Humphrey scored on the power play, with assists from Grady Mofford and Silas Buijs, giving the Rams a 2-1 lead.
The second period would see the Wranglers get on the board first when Konnor Green scored on the power play, with an assist from Foxx Doell, tying the game 2-2. During the playoff series the Rams have always answered back quickly and did so again when Kyle Humphrey scored not even a minute later. Nick Jervis and Grady Mofford would pick up the assists, with the Rams now leading 3-2. The Wranglers would answer right back with a goal of their own, however, to tie the game 3-3. The Wranglers dominated in the shot department in the second period though, out shooting the Rams 18-2.
The third period saw the Rams reclaim the lead after Tristan Hoffus set up Reid Christiansen for a 4-3 lead. But the Wranglers would go on the attack for the rest of the third period, out shooting the Rams 14-6. The Rams would take a late period penalty at 19:19 putting the Wranglers on the power play and pulling their goalie to give them a two man advantage. The Wranglers would even up the game with just 24 seconds left to send the game to overtime 4-4.
Just seven minutes into overtime the underdog Rams pulled through with a huge game winning goal from Tristan Hoffus. Nick Jervis would give a nice stretch pass to Hoffus, sending him in alone on the Wranglers goalie and making the Wranglers pay.
The Rams will have their work cut out for them when they take on the first place Cochrane Generals, who posted a 28-5-3 record during the regular season.
Game one of the best of seven series between the Rams and Generals will be on Wednesday, Feb 16, at Cochrane Arena. Puck drop is at 7:45 p.m.
