The Town of Rocky Mountain House has approved a new event called Kick it to the Curb, which would be taking place with two dates in summer.
Kick it to the Curb is a town-wide event to help residents reduce and reuse. Residents simply place their unwanted but usable items at the front of their properties marked with a “FREE” sign on designated days. For items that remain at the end of the event, they are to be removed within 24 hours.
Popular ideas for Kick it to the Curb include books, DVDS, old furniture and small appliances as well as kitchen gadgets, dishes, cutlery and pots and pans.
The City of Red Deer has been running a Kick it to the Curb event for approximately 12 years say town officials. Kick it to the Curb started off as a twice a year event, running during environment week in June and again in October during Waste Reduction Week. It has expanded in Red Deer over the years and the city-wide event now runs on the third full weekend of every month from May through October.
Many communities such as Innisfail, Sundre, Drumheller and Trochu run a Kick it to the Cub event as well.
Rocky’s dates for Kick it to the Curb would take place on the third week of June and the third week in September.
The rules for Kick it to the Curb are to make sure that you’re items are away from anything of value in your yard. Officials encourage you to ensure your items in Kick it to the Curb are marked with a “FREE” sign, and at the end of the weekend to bring all your items inside.
Councilor Merrin Fraser added, “I’m really excited to see this start up. I think we’ve been wrestling with what to do that was financially smart but also help to fill that need, and to encourage people to reuse. I’m very excited to see everyone out shopping on a beautiful weekend in June.”
