The wildfire danger rating in the Rocky Mountain House area this year is being described as moderate.
Officials with Alberta Wildfire note that as the snow melts, dry grass is exposed and increases the risk of a fast moving wildfire. As a result, they are asking residents to use caution when spending time in forested areas.
Alberta Wildfire has launched a new fire permit through a new online portal. During wildfire season, fire permits are required for any burning in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta, except for campfires. Officials for Alberta Wildfire point out, however, that fire permits are free and help them track what is burning on a landscape. If you’re burning without a fire permit or outside fire permit conditions, your fire is considered a wildfire.
Since the snow is melting, Alberta Wildfire is asking you to take the time to revisit the burn site and ensure you fire is extinguished. Officials say that if fires are not properly put out, the fire can spread and burn underground. Under the right conditions, these fires can re-emerge in the spring as wildfires, warn provincial officials.
To request a fire permit online, visit the new portal. You will need a MyAlberta Digital ID to access the portal. You can also request a fire permit from the Rocky Mountain House forest office by calling 403-845-8250.
