The Town of Rocky Mountain House has documented 12 cases of drug paraphernalia left in Town-owned outhouses in 2023.
Officials say, however, that Rocky Mountain House is not alone, adding that municipalities across the country report finding drug and needle debris in public spaces.
Needles are used by people with certain health conditions, and also by people with substance use disorders (addictions).
Town officials note, most needles are disposed of properly by the people who use them, but unfortunately some needles and syringes get left behind.
What is the Town doing?
- Training front-line staff who may encounter used needles or other paraphernalia on safe handling and disposal.
- Asking the public to report any found items or unsafe conditions immediately.
- Investigating safe-disposal options for people who use injection supplies.
- Advocating for enhanced funding of social services from higher levels of Government.
What residents can do:
- Teach children not to touch needles or debris.
- Children should tell an adult right away if they see anything they do not recognize.
- Report any findings of needles or other debris to the town immediately, by calling 403-845-3220.
- If you can, cover or mark the needle with an object to protect yourself and others from possible harm. A trained employee will attend to safely dispose of the needle.
- If you choose to clean up needles yourself, please carefully read and follow the steps from Alberta Health for Getting Rid of Needles Safely.
The Town of Rocky Mountain House says it acknowledges that unsafe drug use is a complex social issue. While working together to reduce the risks and harmful effects of substance abuse, the Town says they must also hold the safety of staff and public as the highest priority. All needles and other hazards found in Town facilities will be removed as soon as possible.
Residents can help by reporting and findings of needles or other drug debris to the Town immediately by calling 403-845-3220.
