The 90th Annual Caroline Bighorn Stampede is ready to roll May 17-19.
The inaugural rodeo was in held in 1933, and has been held every year since, except 2020 when pandemic restrictions forced the event to be cancelled.
According to president of the Ricinus Wooler Community Association, Terry Pengelly, first-time attendees should prepare by bringing clothing for all weather, and be ready to for a fun weekend of rodeo action.
A full slate of rodeo events are scheduled such as bareback & saddle bronc riding, breakaway roping, junior bull & horse riding, barrel racing and even some fun events for little cowboys and cowgirls.
“We’ll have a trick rider, mutton busting, and a balloon scramble for kids at intermission,” says Pengelly.
Pengelly adds camping during the rodeo is free with admission and that campers should show up early.
“There’s lots of camping space behind the bleachers,” says Pengelly. “It’s a first come, first serve.”
The weekend will feature Saturday evening entertainment at the beer gardens with artists Dean Pengelly and Mike Larson & Friends.
Along with added prize money for this year’s rodeo, organizers say there will be a special dinner to help celebrate the rodeo’s 90th anniversary and thank longtime supporters.
“We’re going to put on a beef on a bun supper to thank all of our sponsors,” says Pengelly. “It’s also open to the public for $20 a ticket.”
Pengelly says pre-sale tickets for the beef on a bun are available until May 15, and anyone interested can email bighornstampede@gmail.com.
The rodeo grounds are located five miles west of Caroline, then half a mile north on Highway 22.
