Four Rocky Mountain House town councillors sported their Edmonton Oilers colours during the June 4 council meeting, the final meeting before the NHL team plays game one of the Stanley Cup finals against the Florida Panthers.
94.5 Rewind Radio News reached out to council to gauge the level of excitement.
Councillor Len Phillips, who has been proudly wearing his #97 Connor McDavid sweater at council meetings during the entire run of the playoffs, said his favorite all-time Oilers memory was watching the team’s 80s-era dynasty while he was living in Edmonton at the time. Phillips recalls celebrating with over 10,000 fans after a championship victory.
By 2006, Phillips was living in Rocky Mountain House, and recalls the heartbreak of the game seven loss to the Carolina Hurricanes.
Phillips predicts the Oilers will win in six games this year.
Deputy Mayor, Marley Capraro says enjoying Oilers hockey is a family tradition. Capraro says her spouse, along with their three kids attended their first NHL game together this year. The game happened to be a highly entertaining 9-2 blowout win for the Oilers against the San Jose Sharks.
Capraro admits her second favorite team is the Toronto Maple Leafs, but her favorite player is Curtis Joseph who played for both the Leafs and the Oilers.
Councillor Dave Auld is a goalie fan. Auld says his all-time favorite player is goaltending legend Grant Fuhr, while his current favorite player is Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner- whom he credits as an essential element to the team’s playoff success thus far.
Auld adds, as a proud Albertan, that his second favorite team is the Calgary Flames.
Mayor Debbie Baich and councillor Ken Moesker both say they’re not the biggest hockey fans, but both add their favorite all-time player is Wayne Gretzky.
Game one of the Stanley Cup finals starts at 6 p.m. MT on June 8 from Sunrise, Florida.
