Officials with Wild Rose School Division (WRSD) and St. Dominic Catholic High School say that Sept. 24 classes are cancelled at both the public and catholic Rocky Mountain House schools due to nearby water main work.
“If we don’t have water for toilets or drinking, it doesn’t work, so we’re shut down for the day,” says WRSD superintendent, Brad Volkman.
According to a statement from the Town of Rocky Mountain House, a water main broke on Sept 23.
The water treatment plant then noticed a rapid draw of water about 9 p.m.
Crews then found the source of the leak about 10:30 p.m. in the greenspace north of Confluence Campus.
The break was in an eight-inch pipe, say Town officials, and was spilling around 500 m3 of water per hour.
The water main was shut in by 11 p.m., says officials, which means closing the valves around the break to stop the leak.
Full pressure and operations were restored by 11:05 p.m.
Officials add Confluence Campus is the only building in town without water as all other residents and businesses still have uninterrupted service.
Officials note there is a contracted track hoe and operator working with town crews right now to expose the pipe and address repairs. They are expecting to have it repaired by the end of the day, Sept. 24.
Town officials are asking residents to avoid the area to let crews complete the repair quickly and safely.
Volkman, along with St. Dominic Catholic High School Principal, Lauren MacKenzie, expect classes to be in session Sept. 25.
