Rocky Mountain House’s Asokewin Friendship Centre will be holding a special day on Oct. 8 to help people in the local area with status card applications and band registration.
The Rocky organization will be joined by neighbors at the Red Deer Native Friendship Society with assistance pertaining to Band Registration and Secured Status.
The process to apply for both can be convoluted, says Melissa Turatus, executive director for the Asokewin Friendship Centre.
“It’s a lot of paperwork, and sometimes folks don’t have access to the technology to get documents where they need to go,” says Turatus.
Turatus adds, the organization will help applicants get all the paperwork correct before submitting.
If applying for Band Registration, applicants will require all of the following:
- Original long-form birth certificates with both parents names on them
- One piece of I.D such as driver’s license or birth certificate
- Knowledge of your history and background (parents and grandparents)
If applying for Secured Status, applicants will need one of the following:
- Birth certificate
- Health care card
- Driver’s/Identification card
- Know your Treaty number
No appointment is necessary, say organizers, but space is limited.
The event runs Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 9 a.m. at its Rocky Mountain House location (4917 52 St cl.).
