The Rocky Rams locked in a win on the road during a rare Wednesday night game in Three Hills.
In a back and forth tilt against the Thrashers, the Rams found themselves down by a goal midway through the third.
A tying powerplay goal from forward Grady Mofford, as well as a late third period go ahead marker from Cooper Lawrence saw the team squeak by with a 5-4 regulation victory.
The Rams were badly outshot during the game with goaltender Cole McLean turning away 40 shots from a Thrashers offence that outgunned the Rams on the shot clock in all three periods.
It was a return to form for McLean who struggled against Ponoka on Oct. 4, being chased from the net after allowing 5 goals in the the first half of the game.
Players on the 4-2 Rams squad are making an impact on the early-season player statistics board, with forward Cooper Lawrence leading the HJHL in points with 16.
Lawrence, along with Rams forward Jake Smith share the league-lead for goals at 6.
The team will spend the Thanksgiving long weekend on the road playing a pair of matinees against Coaldale on Saturday Oct. 12 and Medicine Hat on Sunday Oct. 13.
“What we’ve noticed is that with a couple of those teams in the south, if you can take care of your special teams, that usually gives you an edge,” says head coach Wendall Mason. “They’re maybe not as disciplined in some aspects of their game, but they can be sneaky good.”
The Rams play their next home game Oct. 26 against Airdrie.
