Clearwater County has submitted a letter of support in hopes of obtaining a grant to have two EV (electric vehicle) charging stations installed in Nordegg.
The grant would come from Natural Resources Canada’s Zero Emissions Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP), and the letter was sent to its committee for review.
A county spokesperson said it met with the group heading up the project earlier this fall to scope out possible locations for the stations.
It was determined the best location for installation is 4002 Stuart St., right near the museum.
Once installed, the charging stations would be maintained and operated through ATCO, with Clearwater County maintaining the land and parking lots nearby.
As of the Oct. 22 regular council meeting, Clearwater County CAO Rick Emmons said it was in contact with partners involved in the project, but hadn’t seen any action in some time. Emmons adds it’s still in contact looking for opportunities to get the project across the finish line.
Councillor Neil Ratcliffe says he’s heard from constituents who are eager to have an EV station installed.
For Nordegg, officials say having this service removes an obstacle to visiting the area that it has heard from potential travelers, especially since Nordegg is the last location where public access is possible going into the National Park.
A county spokesperson says it will know by the end of December if it is successful in obtaining the grant.
