David Thompson High School students received 19 different awards and scholarships amounting to around $40,000 at the school’s recent awards night.
Organizers say many of the scholarships were presented by successful local business leaders who themselves are David Thompson alumni.
Clearwater County councillor Darryl Lougheed was in attendance, and says he’s enthusiastic about the upcoming generation of leaders.
“(There was) potential in that room that evening,” says Lougheed. “It’s great to see the next generation of kids moving forward with quality education in our area.”
Lougheed presented the Clearwater County scholarship to Karli Lipka.
The award is presented to a student planning on attending post secondary, who “demonstrates citizenship, volunteerism and leadership within the community”.
Councillor Bryan Cermak, who recently attended the Caroline School Awards and presented an award to student Ayla Bird, also sang the praises of local youth.
“We have some pretty amazing people coming up in such a small school,” says Cermak. “I take my hat off to these kids and to the teachers.”
The ceremony took place Oct. 18 at David Thompson.
