The Rocky Rams will need to re-up at a later date after the Nov. 1 matchup against High River was canceled midway through.
The teams were dressed and warmed up, with the clock counting down in High River. However, after about 10 minutes of regulation play, officials determined there was an issue with the glass surrounding the ice surface, prompting a postponement for player safety.
Head coach Wendall Mason says a hit in the corner knocked the newly installed glass loose, and it couldn’t be properly secured.
He adds it was around an hour of deliberations between game officials and the league before the call came to end the game. A rescheduled date will likely happen sometime in January.
On a more positive note, the Rams ended their five-game losing streak on Nov. 2 against the Red Deer Vipers.
Offensive contributions came from Kyle Humphrey and Jase Bernett, along with Clayton Johnson, who scored twice in the opening frame. The Rams never trailed during the match, but after two unanswered goals from Red Deer in the third period, the game was tied 4-4 as regulation ended.
It didn’t take long to resolve, as defenseman Cole Fox found the net just over two minutes into overtime.
Mason notes it’s a confidence builder for the whole squad, and monkey off the team’s back.
“There was a couple (previous) games where we felt we deserved a different fate,” says Mason.
Mason highlights the efforts of previously scratched players who returned to the lineup with fire in their bellies such as Jake Weimer, Caleb Christiansen and Clayton Johnson.
“It was a complete effort out of all 20 guys on Saturday to get the win,” says Mason. “Just have to stick to what we’re doing and what’s working for us.”
The 5-7 Rams sit in fifth place in the HJHL’s Northern Division.
The Rams face two more road games on this long trip, visiting Ponoka on Nov. 8 and Cochrane Nov. 9.
