Yellowhead MP Gerald Soroka has reacted to the news that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced his resignation.
Writing on social media platform X, Soroka says:
Trudeau resigns and asks the Governor General to prorogue. The Liberals, who claimed “governing” was more important than an election, are now choosing to do neither. The right thing to do would’ve been to call an election and let Canadians decide.
94.5 Rewind Radio News reached out to Soroka’s constituency office for further comment, but was told he was on vacation, returning Jan. 27.
Justin Trudeau says he will resign as prime minister and the leader of the Liberal party following a leadership contest.
He also says Governor General Mary Simon has agreed with his request to prorogue parliament until March 24.
Things took a turn for the worse for Trudeau back in December when Chrystia Freeland, formerly Canada’s deputy prime minister and finance minister, resigned.
Since then, there have been increased calls within Trudeau’s own party for him to step down.

The Liberals, who claimed “governing” was more important than an election, are now choosing to do neither.
The right thing to do would've been to call an election and let Canadians decide.
Meantime, in a statement on X, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith was indignant about Trudeau’s decision to prorogue parliament, and to not call an election immediately, calling it “one of the most irresponsible and selfish acts of a government in Canadian history”.
At this critical time, Canadians need and deserve a prime minister and federal government with a clear mandate won from the Canadian people to negotiate with the incoming U.S. President and his administration on one of the most important international negotiations we have ever… pic.twitter.com/qTyKxmzyj1

Possible replacements are already jumping into the fray, including former British Columbia Premier Christy Clark, who’s rumored to be considering a run.
After a lifetime of public service Justin Trudeau has stepped aside as both Leader of the Liberal Party and Prime Minister of Canada. I want to thank him as a Canadian for his service to the country that he so clearly loves. I wish him and his family well.
