The town of Rocky Mountain House has officially requested the province consider installing more street lighting along Highway 11 within town limits.
In a letter sent to Transportation and Economic Corridors Minister Devin Dreeshen, the town described the lighting along the highway as inconsistent, creating safety concerns and contributing to a number of accidents, including a fatality.
Citing the Alberta Transportation Highway Lighting Guide, the town asked the province to review the existing lighting and ensure it meets current standards.
An accompanying map highlights the lack of lighting on the northern stretch of Highway 11, especially past Highway 598.
Councillor Dale Shippelt, who made the motion on Dec. 17 to explore the proposal, hopes to see street lights installed throughout the town.

Acting Mayor Len Phillips agreed, noting the stark contrast when driving through town at night, where some sections of the highway are lit while others are not. He called the situation “kind of odd” and said having consistent lighting would be an overall improvement.
Chief Administrative Officer Dean Krause cautioned that a response from the province could take time, as decisions on Alberta Transportation projects typically require careful consideration. The province may also request additional information, including safety assessments.
Shippelt noted, the outcome may depend on the proposed twinning of Highway 11 through town limits, along with other upgrades expected over the next two decades.
“The response from Alberta Transportation will be interesting to see,” Shippelt said. “If they’re planning any major highway upgrades, they might ask us to wait until then, but it’s worth pursuing now.”
