All charges have been withdrawn and dismissed for an alleged central Alberta gang member who was facing gun-related charges in relation to an incident last year.
Darwin James Anderson, 28, was facing nine counts but had them all withdrawn or dismissed in Rocky Mountain House Court of Justice on Jan. 13, 2025.
According to the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS), the Crown prosecutor assessed the admissible evidence in this matter and determined there was no reasonable likelihood of conviction.
Anderson was originally charged after a loaded firearm was seized from an alleged gang member following an Alberta Law Enforcement Team (ALERT) investigation on the Sunchild First Nation.
According to police, ALERT Edmonton’s gang enforcement team made the arrest on Feb. 8, 2024, after investigating a shooting that had taken place the previous evening. Police note, ALERT was working alongside Rocky Mountain House RCMP to help address gang-related issues on the Sunchild First Nation and O’Chiese First Nations.
ALERT shared, as a result of the investigation, Darwin Anderson was arrested and charged with six firearms-related offences. According to ALERT, Anderson was in possession of a loaded firearm and numerous rounds of ammunition. According to police, Anderson is an alleged member of a street gang operating on the Sunchild First Nation.
“Gang activity impacts every community in the province and ALERT employs overt and covert enforcement strategies to disrupt their criminal activities,” said Insp. Angela Kemp, Alert Edmonton, at the time of Anderson’s arrest.
ALERT further notes that at the time of Anderson’s arrest, he was wanted on eight criminal warrants for offences relating to firearms, robbery, assaults, and flight from police, which occurred in the Rocky Mountain House area, Wetaskiwin and Tsuu T’ina Nation.
